Khalil Haqqani, the minister of refugee affairs for the Taliban, was tragically killed in a suicide attack that took place inside the interior ministry in Kabul. This is the most high-profile death that the movement has suffered since it regained power in Afghanistan in 2021.

Six additional people were killed in the explosion as Haqqani was leaving his office, according to sources within the interior ministry.

According to the United States government, Khalil Haqqani was a prominent member of the Haqqani network, which was a major section inside the Taliban. He was also labeled as a global terrorist.

In a later statement, the Islamic State organization (IS) asserted that they were responsible for the attack.

An IS member reportedly waited outside the minister’s office and exploded explosives as he went out of the building, as said in a report that was distributed by Amaq, the “news agency” of the Taliban.

A representative for the Taliban has verified that Haqqani was killed by the Islamic State, according to the Reuters news agency.

Jalaluddin Haqqani, Khalil Haqqani’s brother, was a well-known guerrilla leader who fought Soviet troops in Afghanistan throughout the 1980s. He also established the Haqqani network, which was responsible for a number of atrocities committed by the Taliban during their twenty-year insurgency.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, who is the minister’s nephew and the son of Jalaluddin, is currently serving as the minister of the interior in the government of the Taliban.

There are still dozens of bombs and suicide assaults that take place in Afghanistan every year, despite the fact that the overall security situation in Afghanistan has improved since the Taliban acquired complete control of the nation in 2021, when all foreign soldiers were completely withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The Islamic State Khorasan Province, often known as ISKP, is the regional affiliate of the so-called Islamic State group, which is a key adversary of the Taliban. Their claim to several of these individuals has been made.
