KUALA LUMPUR: The leadership of the Malaysian Peninsula Malay Students Alliance (GPMS) is urged to comply with the instructions of the Youth Organization Registrar (ROY) to hold elections for the supreme council as soon as possible, in order to restore the trust of members and the community in the organization.

Former GPMS President Jais Abdul Karim stated that the election will ensure the organization operates transparently and fairly, based on the laws and constitution of GPMS.

He emphasized that the instructions from ROY are clear and should be respected by all parties, including GPMS President Muhd Fazreen Ismadi Fauzi.

“As a respected organization, GPMS is urged to maintain integrity in all actions, especially those related to leadership and the election of the supreme council members,” he said when contacted.

Media reports previously indicated that the issues surrounding the election of the supreme council members need to be resolved maturely and with integrity.

Referring to letters sent by ROY dated July 16 and August 15, which recommended GPMS hold the supreme council elections before September 16, he noted that last Tuesday, ROY issued a letter to GPMS instructing the organization to convene its 70th Annual General Meeting (election) for the 2024-2027 term within 30 days from the date of the letter.

On the same day, media reported that Muhd Fazreen had visited the ROY office on Monday, but he denied that the meeting was to discuss election issues, stating instead that it was solely to address the dismissal of GPMS Vice President 3, Mohd Firdaus Md Radzali, who was accused of violating organizational regulations.

The meeting was also attended by GPMS Vice President 1 Ahmad Salman Ahmad Suhaimi, Information Chief Ku Amirul Faiz Ku Seman, and Treasurer General Shah Helmi Razali.

Jais, who is also the President of the Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW), expressed regret upon receiving media reports indicating that the GPMS President did not provide accurate statements to the media during the meeting with ROY that day.

He pointed out that the meeting with ROY representatives clearly aimed to discuss election issues, so it is very disappointing if this matter is not taken seriously or is attempted to be concealed.

He stated that MCW views it seriously if the GPMS President’s statements aim to obscure these issues, as such actions are wrong, especially when conveying information to the media.

“As an organization that advocates for integrity and transparency, MCW will continue to support any measures that promote a culture of integrity in leadership among the youth,” he said.
