KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Living Costs (KPDN) is currently undertaking a review of e-commerce legislation, according to its Minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

According to the Wilayahku portal, he stated that this review aims to update existing legislation.

“It covers the Electronic Commerce Act 2006, the Consumer Protection Act 1999, and the Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2012, in line with the rapid developments in the e-commerce industry.

“The Review of E-Commerce Legislation, implemented under the provisions of the Fourth Rolling Plan of the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RP4 RMK-12), began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed by March 2025,” he said.

He made these remarks while officiating at the TikTok Shop Seller Summit 2024.

Armizan noted that from January 1 to August 31 this year, out of 30,721 complaints received by KPDN, 7,243, or 23.57 percent, involved online transactions.

“This increase in trend may be due to the rise in buyers and sellers in e-commerce.

“Regardless of the situation, our responsibility at KPDN is to address any complaints, and that is why we seek a more comprehensive legal framework to protect the rights and interests of all parties, including consumers and sellers,” he said.

Additionally, Armizan mentioned that as the leading ministry for the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM), one of the initiatives KPDN is taking to promote it is through online methods.

He also stated that the program aims to target 8,000 local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), covering 300,000 stock keeping units (SKUs).

“As a promotional step, KBBM through TikTok Shop will provide discount vouchers for selected products, and free shipping will also be offered to consumers.

“Moreover, training programs or workshops related to entrepreneurship will be held for participants in this campaign in collaboration with TikTok Shop,” he said.
