Kuala Lumpur is safe, Jalan Masjid India is under control, said KL Mayor
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur is assured to be a safe city, said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
She denied claims that Kuala Lumpur is an unsafe location and that a “giant sinkhole” could occur, as circulated on social media.
She further assured that Jalan Masjid India is also under control.
“The situation around Jalan Masjid India, and Kuala Lumpur in general, is under control, and city residents can continue their daily routines as usual.
“I believe Kuala Lumpur has been well-established for a long time, and during that time it has been safe,” she said at a press conference at the scene.
Also present were Dang Wangi District Police Chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman and the Director of the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, Rozihan Anwar Mamat.
She added that if there are claims that Kuala Lumpur is unsafe, they need to be accompanied by evidence and detailed studies regarding those claims.
“Therefore, if someone says it is unsafe, they must provide evidence and detailed studies,” she said.
She made these comments in response to claims circulating on Facebook that Kuala Lumpur is one of the most unsafe places in Malaysia and is at risk of a ‘giant sinkhole’ occurring at any time.
Further commenting, Maimunah said that a ‘task force’ has been established, including collaboration with the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia and the Public Works Department (JKR), to address safety aspects in the capital.
Last Friday, the media reported that an Indian woman was buried after falling into a sinkhole approximately 8 meters deep in front of Masjid India.
So far, the victim has not been found, and rescue teams are actively conducting the search.
