JOHOR BARU: Johor is preparing to launch pilot schools next year to enhance the state’s education system, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic).

The initiative aims to make Johor’s education system more competitive and progressive. It will be implemented in collaboration with the Johor Education Department.

“This aligns with the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s directive, which stresses the importance of high-quality education,” Onn Hafiz said in a statement. “Special focus will be given to mastering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as the English language.”

The pilot project will initially involve two primary schools and two secondary schools selected by the state education department. Onn Hafiz expressed hope that the initiative will have a positive impact on the state’s future.

On May 9, Tunku Ismail advocated for national education reform, calling for updates to outdated syllabi to keep the next generation competitive. He urged the Federal Government to improve the quality, system, and facilities of education, suggesting that if national changes are not feasible, Johor could lead by reforming its own school syllabi.

It was his inaugural address as the Regent of Johor during the 15th state assembly sitting.

Johor’s education and information committee chairman, Aznan Tamin, noted that the pilot project would commence with four schools and could be expanded statewide if successful.

“We are still finalizing the details and timeframe for the pilot project. It is crucial to involve parents from these schools in the plan. The teaching and learning process needs to be supported by parents, not just within the school environment,” he said.

Aznan also mentioned that currently, 48% of students in Johor are enrolled in STEM classes, with a target to increase this to 60% to 70% by 2028.
