PTPTN to Announce Loan Repayment Deferment Mechanism Soon

GEORGE TOWN: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is finalising the implementation mechanism for loan repayment deferments for low-income borrowers, as announced under Budget 2027.

PTPTN Chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said details of the initiative were being discussed with the Ministry of Finance and would be announced soon.

“For those earning below RM2,500, instalment payments will be deferred, while those earning between RM2,500 and RM3,000 will only need to pay RM50. Those earning above RM3,000 must continue making repayments as usual.

“We are still discussing the details with the Ministry of Finance and will announce a more comprehensive implementation mechanism soon,” she said at the Junior Superhero Simpan SSPN 2026 programme at Penang Hospital here today.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling Budget 2027 on October 9, announced that the government had agreed to grant PTPTN loan repayment deferments to borrowers earning less than RM2,500 a month.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said borrowers earning between RM2,500 and RM3,000 a month would only be required to make a minimum repayment of RM50.

Meanwhile, borrowers with no outstanding arrears who make regular repayments would be given a 10 per cent discount.

Norliza also encouraged borrowers who are employed and financially capable to continue making consistent repayments, as those who do so would be eligible for the 10 per cent discount announced under Budget 2027.

She further encouraged borrowers with outstanding arrears to negotiate with PTPTN to restructure their repayments to avoid being placed on PTPTN’s blacklist.
