BUKIT MERTAJAM: A group of children allegedly threw stones and an iron rod at a 71-year-old woman in Taman Sri Rambai here after becoming upset when she reprimanded them for making noise while playing at a playground.

The incident, which occurred on October 22, left the victim frightened, prompting her to lodge a police report on Monday.

Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said investigations revealed that the incident occurred at about 6pm when the elderly woman reprimanded a group of children playing at a playground near her home for making excessive noise.

He said the children ignored her warning before allegedly throwing stones and an iron rod towards the victim.

“However, the objects thrown did not hit the woman,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Nik Aminuddin said that following the police report, investigations were conducted, leading to the arrest of four Myanmar boys aged between nine and 12.

“All four were detained during several separate raids around Taman Sri Rambai here.

“We also seized several items believed to be connected to the incident,” he added.

He said all four detainees were brought before the Bukit Mertajam Magistrates’ Court for a remand application.

“A four-day remand order has been granted, beginning today until October 30, to facilitate further investigations.

“The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955,” he said.

In this regard, he advised parents and guardians to monitor their children’s behaviour and educate them to always respect others.

“Members of the public are also urged to maintain harmony within their neighbourhoods and report any security threats to the police for further action,” he said.
