KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hopes to strengthen trade and investment ties with Brazil and promote cooperation between ASEAN and Latin America under the continued leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He also congratulated Lula on his election victory, noting that the closely contested race had given the Brazilian leader a renewed mandate from his people.

“My heartfelt congratulations to my friend, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on his historic victory in Brazil’s election.

“There is much we can achieve together: strengthening trade and investment, promoting cooperation between ASEAN and Latin America, and deepening the partnership between our two countries,” he said in a Facebook post today.

The Prime Minister said Lula’s lifelong commitment to social justice, poverty eradication and ensuring that the voices of developing nations are heard had earned him respect far beyond Brazil.

“I have always valued our friendship, and I share his conviction that countries of the Global South must have a stronger voice in shaping a fair international order,” he said.

Last Sunday, Lula won the second round of Brazil’s presidential election after securing approximately 51.8 per cent of the vote against 48.2 per cent obtained by his challenger, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, successfully retaining the presidency for a fourth term as the country’s head of state.
