BANGKOK: Malaysia and Thailand will review bilateral cooperation and strengthen joint development in border areas through the 16th Malaysia-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting for Bilateral Cooperation (JC) and the 7th Ministerial Meeting on the Joint Development Strategy for Border Areas (JDS) here on Tuesday.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will co-chair both meetings with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow in Bangkok.

According to the ministry, the JC serves as the main mechanism for reviewing progress and setting the direction of bilateral cooperation across various sectors, while the JDS focuses on advancing joint development in the border areas of both countries.

“These meetings are a continuation of the 15th JC and 6th JDS meetings held in Kuala Lumpur on August 6, 2024, and follow the Thai Prime Minister’s official visit to Malaysia on July 9 and 10 this year.

“The meetings will also contribute to preparations for the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Thailand in 2027,” the ministry said in a statement issued on Monday.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said Mohamad, who will undertake a working visit to Thailand from October 27 to 28, is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Sihasak on key areas of cooperation and regional developments.

“The discussions will cover exchanges of visits and the organisation of activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, security cooperation, particularly in Thailand’s southern border provinces, border area development and defence cooperation.

“Economic and trade cooperation, cross-border connectivity and cooperation within the ASEAN framework will also be among the topics on the agenda,” the statement said.

The two foreign ministers are also expected to exchange views on regional developments, including the situation in Myanmar and issues involving Thailand and Cambodia.
