PUTRAJAYA: The Government will refine the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and the Penal Code to deal with the increasing cybercrime, along with the development of technology and the complexity of the crime.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said it was the result of discussions with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) who proposed amendments to the law.

However, he said, the ministry needs to seek cooperation from various parties including Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

“We have an impact in terms of the existing law, we should look again at the powers of the police, especially investigative officers which are limited based on the existing law.

“Following that, it is reasonable for the PDRM and the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) to look back at (the existing law).

“This idea has already been raised around 2018 and 2019 because it is expected that the trend of commercial crime will be more and more challenging with the strength of forces other than the law.

In addition, Saifuddin said, the government will also study the proposal to add members to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK), to strengthen the team.

He said, currently JSJK has approximately 2,216 officers and members across the country tasked with dealing with increasingly challenging commercial crimes.

“Yesterday I was briefed by Datuk Seri Ramli (Director of JSJK Bukit Aman) on the trend of commercial crime which is causing more and more loss of ringgit money, because of that there is an urgent need especially to empower JSJK.

“I will take it to the highest level by discussing with the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police, KSU (Chief Secretary), JPA (Public Service Department) and KSN.

“Hopefully we have a method to either make a new recruitment application or take advantage of existing internal strengths with some modifications,” he said.

He said, the matter is his concern to curb the crime in this country.
