YANGON: At the border town of Pago Thyusu, in Karen state’s Khyin Peygyi district, between Myanmar and Thailand, hundreds of trucks, according to traders, have been waiting for the border gates to reopen.

A merchant stated that hundreds of trucks are presently waiting on both sides in Thailand and Myanmar, but it is unknown when the border gates between the two nations would reopen.

The trader further mentioned that on June 17, border crossings were halted by the Myanmar side. “There were no automobiles entering or leaving when the Thai side was closed. He stated, “They are waiting for the gates to reopen.”

Residents said they have been able to import products at several other gateways, despite the closure of the Myanmar-Thai border crossings. Later reports state that Pagoda Trisu City’s border gates are open again.

In the meantime, a representative of the Bohsu City Regional Development Office stated that the border gates’ opening date will be announced on June 22.

Another representative of the Pagosu City Regional Development Office stated, “We are unsure if the Three Pagodas Pass would continue to have its border gates closed or if it would be reopened before June 22.”

Even though the roads connecting the villages of Myawati and Kok Krait were impassable, Pago Tso Su locals claimed that Thai products were still being delivered from the side of the island.”The Myawati side’s roads are terrible. A Pagoda Three Su resident stated, “There are more goods coming down from Thailand to the Three Pagodas Pass than before.”

The Pagoda Three Su border point on the Thai-Myanmar border is one of 22 unlawful border trade stations that the Thai-Myanmar regional authorities have organised and opened.

Reports of frequent situational shutdowns have surfaced.

Tachilek Mae Sai and Myawati-Mae Sot are the border trade locations that the governments of Thailand and Myanmar have formally opened. Additionally, gates can be found at Kaw Thaung-Ranong and Hat Khe-Nam Phu Ro.

At these border trade crossings, passports are needed, but people can also enter and exit with a temporary travel permit, according to reports. – ELEVEN MEDIA GROUP/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
