PM Anwar Confirms Malaysia Considering Acquiring India’s BrahMos Missiles
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that Malaysia is exploring the possibility of acquiring India’s BrahMos air-to-surface missile system.
He stressed that discussions are still ongoing although no final decision has been made so far.
In an interview with NDTV India, he said discussions on the matter were held during a bilateral meeting with his counterpart from India, Narendra Modi, but the party with the authority to make the decision is the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
“(We) have discussed, but usually my position is to involve the relevant department or agency, those who have expertise in the air force, they should continue the discussions.
“They have held preliminary discussions and I told Prime Minister Modi that I strongly support it because this relationship is built on trust and we want to strengthen it in all areas,” he said.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, acknowledged India’s defence capabilities.
BrahMos is a long-range ramjet-powered supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, fighter aircraft or mobile launchers (TEL).
It is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, which together formed BrahMos Aerospace.
