Ops HUU: Police said the most common violation is traffic obstruction

KUALA LUMPUR: With 15,705 summonses issued in the first seven days of the “Respect Traffic Laws” (HUU) operation in the city, traffic obstruction has been the most often committed violation.

As of Monday, June 10, 21,169 summonses have been issued in the operation, which began on June 4, according to Assistant Chief of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Asst Comm Saifudin Mohd Salleh.

With 15,705 summonses, traffic obstruction is the most common crime. This is followed by halting at a pedestrian walkway (1,102), driving without a licence (678), having an expired road tax (450), using an illegal number plate (336) and stopping in the yellow box (29).

“Besides that, we also issued 40 summonses for not having vehicle insurance, not wearing helmets (64), no number plates (156), no side mirrors (248), using a mobile phone while driving (111), not displaying the ‘P’ sticker (167), expired licences (107), malfunctioning brake lights (13), and illegal modifications (39),” he stated when reached on Tuesday, June 11.

38 people were also detained by police, according to ACP Saifudin.

“We also seized five motorcycles and a lorry,” he continued.

According to him, the operation involved around 2,642 police officers, with additional law enforcement personnel from several agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall providing assistance.

“In order to raise awareness of the significance of adhering to traffic laws and regulations, we are being rigorous in our enforcement operation.

“It is vital for all road users to adhere to traffic laws at all times, not only for their own safety but for the safety of others as well,” he stated.

The operation, according to ACP Saifudin, concentrated on 12 sites throughout the city.

The following intersections are involved: Puduraya/Jalan Tun Perak; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Imbi; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Chulan; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Ampang; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Laut; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan P. Ramlee; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Abdullah; Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman; the intersection of Jalan Dang Wangi/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman; and the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

“In addition to safety, the operation is important to ensure smooth traffic, including during non-peak hours,” he stated. “We hope the operation will also lead to better road ethics among road users.”

According to him, the following infractions would be prioritised: speeding, running a red light, using a cell phone while driving, and obstructing traffic.

“We hope the public will cooperate and adhere to traffic rules and regulations,” he stated.
