PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has strongly denied viral claims on social media regarding the existence of individuals impersonating MACC officers.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the MACC stressed that impersonating its officers is illegal, violates existing legal provisions, and has the potential to undermine the integrity of the institution.

The MACC urged the public to always be cautious when approached by any individual claiming to be an MACC officer. Members of the public are also advised to verify the identity of MACC officers through official channels before providing any information or cooperation.

The commission also called on the public to immediately make a report if they suspect any case of impersonation.

The MACC emphasized that impersonating an MACC officer constitutes a criminal offence under Malaysian law.

Among the legal provisions that may be applied are Section 170 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine, or both, for the offence of impersonating a public servant. Additionally, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 also provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, for the offence of misuse of network facilities.

The MACC also informed that further legal action may also be taken under other relevant laws if the impersonation involves elements of fraud or attempts to deceive members of the public.

For verification purposes and to obtain official information, the public is encouraged to visit the MACC’s official website at www.sprm.gov.my or follow its official social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter). The public may also contact the MACC toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-6000.
