PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) seized 6,916 units of communication equipment suspected to be uncertified, estimated to be worth RM2.06 million, through Ops V380.

MCMC said Ops V380, which was carried out on 24 June, targeted a company involved in uncertified communication equipment that did not comply with established technical standards.

According to the commission, among the items seized were wireless CCTV cameras, computers, printers, mobile phones and WiFi routers to assist in the investigation.

“A total of 44 officers were involved in the operation, which was conducted simultaneously at a storage warehouse in Klang as well as a premises used as a management office and live broadcast studio in Johor Bahru.

“Preliminary investigations found that the communication equipment was offered and sold through e-commerce platforms, including TikTok Shop and Shopee.

“As a result of the operation, we also recorded statements from eight individuals, including the company manager, warehouse assistants and live broadcast hosts, to assist in the investigation,” it said in a statement.

MCMC said the operation was carried out based on intelligence and strategic collaboration between the commission and SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. as a registered certification body.

“The sale and use of uncertified communication equipment can compromise user safety as they do not comply with established technical standards.

“In addition to affecting device performance and reliability, their use also has the potential to cause interference to communication networks and affect the quality of communication services,” it said.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 16 of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000, which provides for a maximum fine of RM300,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC said it will continue to intensify enforcement actions against the sale, distribution and possession for the purpose of selling uncertified communication equipment.

“The public is also advised to purchase certified communication equipment to ensure user safety and avoid interference to the country’s communication networks,” it said.
