SONGKHLA: The Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla has advised Malaysians who are in or planning to visit southern Thailand to remain vigilant following a warning of heavy to very heavy rain expected to hit several areas in the country from 28 June to 3 July.

In a statement on Monday, the consulate informed that the warning was issued by Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

According to the consulate, the weather conditions have the potential to cause flash floods, floods, rapid water flow from forested areas, landslides as well as strong waves in coastal areas along the Andaman Sea.

“As such, Malaysians who are in or planning to visit Thailand, particularly in areas identified as high-risk, are advised to remain vigilant, monitor the latest weather developments and comply with all instructions and advice issued by the Thai authorities from time to time,” it said.

The Consulate General of Malaysia also encouraged Malaysians to obtain appropriate travel insurance before commencing their journey.

This is to mitigate the risk of losses or difficulties that may arise due to unforeseen incidents while in Thailand.

In addition, it also advised the public to avoid visiting waterfalls, caves, hillsides, rivers and beaches identified as high-risk, especially if weather conditions worsen or local authorities enforce safety restrictions.

Malaysians in need of consular assistance can contact the Duty Officer at the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla via +66 81-990-1930 or email at mwsongkhla@kln.gov.my.

The Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla also informed that it will continue to monitor weather developments and the situation in Thailand, and will relay the latest information if necessary.

The warning was issued as several areas in southern Thailand continue to face the risk of unpredictable weather following the monsoon season.

In late November and December last year, the Songkhla region, including Hat Yai city, was hit by major floods due to continuous heavy rain, which submerged residential areas and business centres, disrupted transportation networks and caused thousands of residents to be evacuated.

The disaster also affected the travel of Malaysians entering southern Thailand through land border checkpoints.
