Awareness Alone Is Not Enough, Neurodivergent Community Needs Holistic Support

PETALING JAYA – Support for the neurodivergent community must go beyond raising awareness and be translated into concrete actions that can benefit these individuals, says a state official.

Community Welfare Executive Councillor, Anfaal Saari said society needs to build systems that truly support neurodivergent individuals across various aspects of life, including education, personal development, and career opportunities.

Neurodivergent refers to individuals with neurological differences such as autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia, who require support tailored to their respective needs.

“Efforts to support the neurodivergent community cannot stop at the level of awareness alone, but must be followed up with sustained action.

“We need to move beyond awareness and build systems that truly support neurodivergent individuals,” she said when officiating the 2026 Neurodivergent Carnival organised by UNITAR here today.

According to Anfaal, the responsibility of creating an inclusive environment does not lie with any single party alone but requires collaboration between the government, educational institutions, the private sector, and society at large.

Meanwhile, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities at UNITAR Education Group, Professor Dr Mailikka Govindarajoo, said inclusive education is not merely about granting access to students but ensuring they feel a sense of belonging, respect, and confidence to grow.

“UNITAR is committed to preparing educators and communities to see neurodiversity as a strength that should be celebrated,” she said.

She added that these efforts are crucial for creating a learning environment that enables every student to thrive according to their potential.

The 2026 Neurodivergent Carnival runs from June 11 to 13, aimed at strengthening the inclusive education agenda and support for the neurodivergent community.

The programme was also attended by Senator Isaiah Jacob, a member of the Dewan Negara (Upper House) who also serves as the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD).
