PETALING JAYA: Selangor Perikatan Nasional has urged Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki to issue an unconditional public apology to the Sultan of Selangor and the people of the state over remarks and actions alleged to have caused public discomfort and unnecessary tension.
Selangor Perikatan chairman Mohamed Azmin Ali said the coalition fully supported the decree issued by the Sultan of Selangor, which emphasised the importance of understanding and appreciating the principles of the Rukun Negara as well as respecting the constitutional monarchy institution as a foundation of stability for both Selangor and the federation.
He said the royal decree was not merely a reminder but a serious reprimand against what he described as arrogant and discourteous behaviour by certain political leaders who failed to understand the boundaries of decorum, politeness and respect towards the Malay Rulers’ institution.
According to Azmin, the decree’s reference to Wong and former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu, both from DAP, indicated that the issue had gone beyond ordinary political disputes and touched on core principles of nationhood.
He also called on Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari, as leader of the state assembly, to take firm action against Wong, including referring the matter to the Selangor State Assembly Rights and Privileges Committee.
Azmin stressed that such action was important because the Sultan of Selangor is one of the pillars of the state assembly under the constitutional monarchy system.
“The Speaker must accept such a motion in order to defend the dignity, sanctity and honour of the Selangor state assembly,” he said.
He warned that any failure by the Mentri Besar to act decisively could create the perception that the assembly practised double standards in matters involving discipline, order and respect for the constitutional monarchy institution.
Azmin added that the issue should not be viewed through a political lens alone, saying all elected representatives must understand that freedom of speech comes with responsibility and should never be used to challenge decorum, morality and the principles of the Rukun Negara.
He also called on all parties to uphold the spirit of the Rukun Negara and treat the Sultan of Selangor’s decree as guidance in preserving harmony, unity and stability in the state.
