KUALA LUMPUR: Four districts in Kedah are currently experiencing a Level Two heatwave, with temperatures reaching dangerous highs as of 6am on Sunday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
The affected districts Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang, and Baling have recorded daily maximum temperatures between 37°C and 40°C for three consecutive days, placing them under the second-highest alert level.
Meanwhile, several other areas in Kedah, including Bandar Baharu, Kulim, Kuala Muda, Pulau Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Pendang, and Sik, remain under a Level One hot weather alert, where temperatures range between 35°C and 37°C.
The heatwave has also extended beyond Kedah, with Level One alerts issued across the entire state of Perlis and North Seberang Prai in Penang, as well as parts of Perak including Kinta, Kuala Kangsar, and Hulu Perak.
In response to the extreme weather conditions, the Kedah Education Department has ordered schools in Kota Setar and Pendang to implement home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) for three days starting Sunday.
Authorities said the move was taken following MetMalaysia reports confirming sustained Level Two temperatures in the two districts since Thursday, March 26.
Officials have urged residents to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities, and monitoring vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly as the hot weather persists.
MetMalaysia continues to monitor the situation closely and is expected to provide further updates as conditions evolve.
