PUTRAJAYA: : Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered all government agencies, government-linked companies, and government-linked investment companies not to hold Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses this year, citing economic concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking at a special press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday, Anwar also announced that overseas trips for ministers and government officials should be minimized, except for those that are already scheduled or compulsory.
“This sends a message for more prudent spending,” he said, adding that the move is aimed at preparing the country for potential economic fallout.
Anwar emphasized that the decision is a responsible one. “This is a sane decision so that we are not adversely affected if the situation worsens. We need to take a moderate and responsible approach,” he explained.
He further stated that a special Cabinet meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 13, to review the rapidly unfolding international developments and to assess Malaysia’s fiscal and financial position.
“We have faced crises before. I am confident that with responsibility and cooperation from everyone, including the government, civil service, and private sector, we can address this issue tactfully,” the prime minister said.
The announcement comes amid rising global economic uncertainty due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have affected energy prices and trade flows worldwide.
