Türkiye Extends Naval Mission in Gulf of Aden to Strengthen Maritime Security

Istanbul: Türkiye has extended the deployment of its naval forces in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters for an additional year, reinforcing its commitment to protecting commercial shipping and supporting international maritime security efforts.

A presidential motion published in the Official Gazette confirms that the Turkish Naval Forces will continue operating in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, the Arabian Sea, and nearby regions from Feb. 10, 2026. The decision aims to safeguard Turkish-flagged and Türkiye-linked commercial vessels, enhance anti-piracy and counter-maritime terrorism operations, and support humanitarian assistance activities.

The motion also highlighted the role of the deployment in strengthening Türkiye’s naval operational capabilities and deepening international cooperation. Since 2009, Türkiye has been an active contributor to multinational anti-piracy missions, including NATO’s Operation Ocean Shield and the Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151). Türkiye has assumed command of CTF-151 seven times between 2009 and 2025.

According to the document, no new UN Security Council resolution has been adopted since 2022 to renew earlier mandates for operations against piracy, armed robbery, and maritime terrorism in Somali territorial waters and adjacent areas, following a request by Somalia to the UN secretary-general. However, international efforts continue in waters outside Somalia’s territorial jurisdiction under UN Security Council Resolution 1851, adopted in 2008.

The motion also referenced the European Union’s Operation Atalanta, which was extended until Feb. 28, 2027, under a decision by the EU Council in December 2024.

Officials said the extension reflects Türkiye’s national and international obligations to uphold maritime security, ensure freedom of navigation, and contribute to global peace and stability in accordance with international law.
