MACC Targets Governance Gaps in E-Waste Management Following Ops Nature Raids

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is focusing on governance weaknesses in electronic waste (e-waste) management after conducting Ops Nature, a coordinated operation by its Selangor and Negri Sembilan branches.

Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention), said the operation took place on Tuesday (Jan 20) at two locations in Klang and Nilai. While investigating corruption-related offenses, the commission is also examining governance systems to identify root causes and systemic gaps contributing to ongoing e-waste management challenges.

“Failure to address governance shortcomings effectively could create opportunities for corrupt practices and allow illegal e-waste imports to persist,” Azmi said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 21).

The commission has initiated a governance-focused investigation to determine the underlying causes and identify measures to prevent such issues from recurring. He noted that mismanagement of e-waste not only damages the environment but also results in losses to national revenue.

Preliminary findings highlight weaknesses in monitoring mechanisms and enforcement follow-ups related to e-waste. However, Azmi stressed that these issues will only be confirmed after a comprehensive governance review.

He added that similar problems could exist in other states, and the investigation may be expanded nationwide if necessary. MACC will collaborate closely with relevant agencies, including the Department of Environment and the Special E-Waste Task Force chaired by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, urging all agencies to take a proactive role in managing e-waste within their jurisdictions.
