KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27:  Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the ceasefire agreed upon between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as an important step toward de-escalation and the protection of civilians along the disputed border areas.

In a statement, Anwar said the ceasefire, which came into effect at 12:00 pm (UTC+7), demonstrated a shared understanding by both sides of the need for restraint, particularly to prevent further harm to civilian populations.

“The decision to halt fighting and to hold forces in place reflects a common recognition that restraint is required, above all in the interest of civilians,” he said.

Anwar noted that the joint statement issued by Cambodia and Thailand outlined several constructive and practical measures to support stability, including verification by an ASEAN Observer Team and the establishment of direct communication channels between the defense authorities of both countries.

“These measures provide a sound basis for stability, and I am hopeful that both sides will implement them in good faith,” he added.

As Malaysia prepares to hand over the ASEAN Chair to the Philippines at midnight on Jan 1, 2026, Anwar reaffirmed Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to supporting regional peace efforts. He said Malaysia would continue to back initiatives aimed at ensuring the ceasefire commitments are honored and that ASEAN’s reputation as a credible and effective platform for peace is upheld.

“The prestige and credibility of ASEAN as a region of peace must be preserved,” Anwar said, underscoring the bloc’s role in fostering dialogue and preventing conflict among member states.

The ceasefire has been welcomed by regional observers, who see it as a crucial opportunity to reduce tensions and strengthen confidence-building measures between Cambodia and Thailand under ASEAN’s framework.
