Malaysia, Egypt Call for Immediate End to Atrocities in Gaza
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Egypt have condemned attacks by the Israeli regime in Gaza and called for the restoration of peace and security amid the deteriorating humanitarian situation that continues to affect Palestinians.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said both countries shared concerns over the situation in Palestine and Gaza, particularly the ongoing violence perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian people.
He said Malaysia also appreciated Egypt’s role in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid from Malaysia to Palestinians in Gaza.
Anwar said the two leaders also discussed several international issues, including tensions in the Strait of Hormuz involving Iran.
“Malaysia also takes a firm stand against the atrocities committed against Palestinians in Gaza following Israel’s aggression and violence.
“I am grateful that Egypt has provided significant assistance in our various efforts to deliver aid. Although our contributions are modest and cannot compare with Egypt’s efforts, the assistance has been successfully delivered through cooperation with the Egyptian authorities and the President’s Office itself,” he said.
He said this at a joint press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the latter’s two-day state visit to Malaysia on Saturday.
In a joint statement, both leaders reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, including their right to establish an independent Palestinian state.
They also urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to reconsider Palestine’s application for full membership in the world body, in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/ES-10/23, adopted on May 10, 2024.
Malaysia and Egypt also condemned Israel’s continued violations of international law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law in its military operations.
Both countries also expressed concern over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, including incursions and airstrikes that have killed more than 2,000 civilians and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
Accordingly, both leaders called for an immediate ceasefire to end the humanitarian catastrophe and expressed their full support for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to preserve peace and security in the region.
