Saudi-Led Coalition Issues Warning to Southern Separatists Over Tensions in Yemen’s Hadramout

CAIRO, Dec 27: Yemen’s Saudi-led military coalition has warned the Southern Transitional Council (STC) against taking any military actions in the eastern province of Hadramout that could jeopardize ongoing de-escalation efforts, pledging to respond firmly to protect civilians.

According to Saudi state media, coalition spokesperson General Turki al-Malki said any moves that undermine stability in the strategically important province would be countered, stressing that the coalition remains committed to preventing further escalation.

The warning came after Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, formally requested the coalition to take immediate action to safeguard civilians in Hadramout. Al-Alimi accused armed groups linked to the STC of committing violations that threaten public safety and risk destabilizing the region.

Hadramout, Yemen’s largest province and a key oil-producing area, has largely been spared the intense fighting seen elsewhere in the country. However, rising political and military tensions between the internationally recognized government and the STC have raised concerns that the area could become a new flashpoint.

The STC, which seeks an independent southern Yemen, is a powerful actor within the Saudi-led coalition but has repeatedly clashed with forces loyal to the central government. Observers warn that renewed confrontation in Hadramout could complicate broader efforts to stabilize Yemen and ease humanitarian suffering.

The coalition said it would continue monitoring the situation closely and take necessary measures to maintain security, prevent violence, and protect civilians amid fears that internal divisions could derail fragile de-escalation initiatives.
