IPOH: Police have detained four men believed to be involved in the attempted theft of underground cables along Jalan Kamunting Batu Kurau, close to Taiping Vocational College, early Saturday morning (Nov 15).

Taiping OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Nasir Ismail said officers acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off from a teenager who claimed to have seen several individuals behaving suspiciously while trying to remove a cable manhole cover by the roadside.

A patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene at around 1.50am, where they found four men, aged 38 to 41, allegedly in the process of prying open the manhole using specialized tools.

Police arrested the suspects on the spot and seized several items, including two machetes, two screwdrivers, and a Perodua Myvi believed to have been used during the attempted theft.

“The arrests were made while the suspects were in the act of removing the cable manhole cover,” ACP Mohamad Nasir said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code, which deals with attempted theft. All four men have been remanded for three days, until Nov 17, to facilitate further investigations.
