Salah Shouldn’t Be Automatic Starter in Away Matches Amid Form Slump: Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested that star forward Mohamed Salah should no longer be considered an automatic starter in away fixtures, citing the Egyptian’s recent poor run of form.

Carragher’s comments came after Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, losing 2–1 to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Salah, 33, who signed a two-year contract extension in April, has struggled to replicate his outstanding form from last season and has now gone seven matches without scoring from open play.

The Liverpool talisman missed a crucial chance against United, further intensifying scrutiny over his performances.

“Liverpool have got two away games coming up in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then at Brentford,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “I don’t think Salah should start both of those games.”

“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool dominates possession and creates chances around the box, situations where Salah usually thrives,” Carragher explained.

“But in away games, where more defensive work is required to support the full-backs, I don’t think he should be starting every match right now, especially given his current form.”

Liverpool entered Sunday’s fixture after back-to-back Premier League defeats to Crystal Palace and Chelsea, followed by a Champions League loss to Galatasaray  a run that has raised concerns about the club’s momentum under manager Jürgen Klopp.

Carragher’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among analysts that Salah, once Liverpool’s most reliable finisher, may need rest and rotation as the club looks to regain stability both domestically and in Europe.
