KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14:  Energy ministers and senior officials from across Southeast Asia convened in the Malaysian capital today for the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and its related sessions, held from 14 to 17 October 2025.

Hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, the annual high-level gathering aims to deepen regional cooperation in clean energy development, energy security, and sustainable economic growth.

This year’s meeting is being held under the theme “Advancing Energy Connectivity and Transition for a Sustainable ASEAN,” which reflects the region’s commitment to advancing collective action in tackling energy challenges and achieving long-term sustainability goals.

The meeting is chaired by Malaysia’s Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, and attended by energy ministers from all ten ASEAN member states, along with representatives from dialogue partners, international organizations, and regional energy agencies.

Discussions at the meeting focus on several key priorities, including the expansion of renewable energy, enhancement of regional power grid interconnectivity, promotion of decarbonization strategies, and integration of ASEAN’s energy markets.

Ministers are also reviewing the progress of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016–2025, which serves as the region’s strategic blueprint for advancing energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability. The meeting will further outline the next phase of the ASEAN energy roadmap beyond 2025.

A joint ministerial statement will be issued at the conclusion of the meeting, reaffirming ASEAN’s shared commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in line with national and regional goals, strengthening energy resilience and connectivity, and ensuring affordable and inclusive access to modern energy across Southeast Asia.

Malaysia’s role as host underscores its growing leadership in shaping ASEAN’s clean energy agenda. The country has been actively implementing its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), a comprehensive strategy to guide Malaysia toward a low-carbon and high-value energy future.

In his address, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to driving innovation and regional collaboration in renewable energy, particularly in solar, biomass, and green hydrogen development. He stressed that stronger partnerships within ASEAN are vital to achieving shared clean energy goals and ensuring sustainable growth for the region.

Alongside the main ministerial meeting, several associated sessions with ASEAN’s dialogue partners, including China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, will focus on advancing technology cooperation, energy efficiency, and clean infrastructure investment.

These engagements aim to strengthen ASEAN’s capacity to build a more integrated and resilient energy network, capable of meeting the region’s growing demand while minimizing environmental impact.

As deliberations continue in Kuala Lumpur, ASEAN leaders are expected to reaffirm their shared vision of a cleaner, greener, and more connected regional energy future, one that supports sustainable development and energy equity for all.
