US Envoy’s Planned Visit to Egypt Postponed Amid Gaza War Tensions

Jerusalem, Sept 28 (VoM): A rare visit to Egypt by Washington’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has been postponed, a US official confirmed on Sunday, without elaborating on the reasons behind the delay.

The trip, initially announced by the US embassy in Tel Aviv, was set to include high-level talks in Cairo, with discussions expected to focus on the Gaza war. Media outlets noted that it would have marked one of the few such trips by a sitting American envoy to Egypt in recent years.

Egypt, which has long served as a key mediator alongside the US and Qatar in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, has sharply criticized Israel’s ongoing air and ground campaign in Gaza City. The United Nations estimated that before the latest offensive, the city was home to nearly one million people.

Since the conflict erupted in October 2023, Cairo has repeatedly warned that the fighting risks pushing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians across its border into the Sinai Peninsula. Egyptian officials have also rejected Israeli concerns over their military presence in Sinai, insisting that their forces are deployed solely to safeguard national security.

Huckabee, a close ally of President Donald Trump, was appointed ambassador to Israel following Trump’s re-election in November. His postponed trip comes just days after Trump unveiled a new proposal to end the Gaza war in consultations with Arab and Muslim leaders.
