Putrajaya, Sept 13 (VoM): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to appreciate and safeguard the country’s peace and unity, warning that turmoil abroad serves as a stark reminder of what instability can bring.

Speaking at an event in Johor today, Anwar said unity is the foundation of national peace, which in turn drives economic growth and ensures the well being of citizens.

“Compared to many other countries, we are far better off,” he said, citing recent events in Nepal and the United States.

“In Nepal, riots broke out everywhere, a minister was stripped, and his wife was burned to death. Just two days ago, there was also a shooting involving a leader at a university in the US,” Anwar noted.

Nepal’s government collapsed on Wednesday following violent anti-corruption protests that left at least 51 people dead, the country’s worst unrest since the monarchy was abolished in 2008. In the US, a young Utah man suspected of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a university was arrested on Thursday.

Anwar stressed that Malaysia must learn from such tragedies.

“So let us pray that we can continue to preserve peace and unity,” he said.

The prime minister also highlighted that physical and economic development must go hand in hand with moral and social values.

“Don’t let development erode what truly matters,” he said. “We may build malls and industries and record high profits, but if we ignore issues like income, housing, welfare, and education, we destroy our values and morals in the process.”
