KUCHING: According to a state minister, Sarawak’s decision to begin teaching science and maths in English in secondary schools in 2026 will help students flourish internationally.

English should not be neglected because it is an international language, according to Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“The curriculum and educational system in Malaysia is one issue we are now dealing with. Regretfully, many of our graduates from local universities struggle with their English.

In the media chamber of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, May 14, he expressed his happiness to reporters about Sarawak’s decision to start teaching science and mathematics in English.

Sarawakian secondary schools will begin teaching science and maths in English in 2026, when the first group of students to study both courses in English join Form One, according to a statement made on Monday, May 13, by state Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah.

Following approval by the Education Ministry, Sarawak secondary schools will now teach mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and additional mathematics in English.

Beginning in 2020 with Year One students, Sarawak implemented a dual language programme (DLP) to teach Science and Mathematics in English.

Additionally, Abdul Karim emphasised the significance of making sure educators have the tools necessary to effectively teach science and maths to students in English.

“Those graduating from teachers’ colleges might have to be trained to be proficient in English for the subjects they are going to teach,” he stated.
