HONG KONG: Japanese pop idol Kenshin Kamimura has been found guilty of indecent assault in Hong Kong after allegedly touching a female interpreter’s thigh during an event.

The court heard that the incident occurred while Kamimura, 27, was in the city for a promotional appearance. Prosecutors said he placed his hand on the interpreter’s thigh without her consent, leading to a complaint and subsequent arrest.

While the magistrate convicted Kamimura of the charge, the court opted not to impose a custodial sentence. Instead, he was handed a suspended sentence and ordered to undergo counselling, with the judge citing his clean record, expressions of remorse, and cooperation during the investigation.

The interpreter, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, said the incident caused her distress and embarrassment, particularly as it took place in a professional setting.

Kamimura, who rose to fame as a member of a Japanese pop group, apologized publicly after the verdict, saying he respected the court’s decision and would reflect on his actions.

Legal experts noted that indecent assault in Hong Kong carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment if tried in the High Court, though sentencing can vary depending on the circumstances and mitigating factors.
