China’s President Xi Jinping promised an “all-out battle against corruption” on Monday (Jan. 6), as the country’s top disciplinary agency met in Beijing for its annual planning session.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, Xi said, “We must always keep our tenacity and perseverance… and resolutely fight the hard, long, and all-out battle against corruption.”

Since he took office a little more than ten years ago, the Chinese leader has been in charge of a broad fight against corruption in the government.

Some people support the policy because they think it leads to better government, but others say it’s just a way for Xi to get rid of political opponents.

As a code word for corruption, “serious violations of discipline” got a top military official removed and put under investigation by the ruling Communist Party in November.
