GEORGETOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has become the second best university in the country after its ranking rose to 128th in the world in the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2027.
The climb of six rungs also cements its position within the top 10 per cent of the world’s best universities.
USM, in a statement today, informed that for the QS WUR 2027 edition, a total of 8,808 higher education institutions worldwide were assessed, with the number increasing compared to 8,467 institutions in the previous year.
Only 1,504 institutions from that total were successfully listed in the global ranking.
“This improved performance reflects USM’s ongoing commitment to strengthening academic excellence, expanding research impact, driving strategic internationalisation, and empowering the university’s sustainability agenda.
“Among USM’s most notable achievements is the International Students indicator, where the university ranks 61st in the world.
“USM also recorded a 100th position globally for the International Research Network (IRN) indicator, thus emerging as the best university in Malaysia for that indicator,” according to the statement.
USM also recorded improvements in five of the nine key QS indicators, namely the International Research Network (IRN); Sustainability; Faculty-Student Ratio; Citations per Faculty; and International Faculty.
According to the statement, USM also continues to strengthen its research influence at the international level, with the number of net papers for the period 2020 to 2024 increasing by 7.46 per cent.
“Meanwhile, the total net citations, excluding self-citations, for the period 2020 to 2025 increased by 23.94 per cent.
“This improvement reflects the quality and visibility of USM’s research, which is increasingly gaining recognition within the global academic community.”
Meanwhile, USM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Seri Ir Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed, said the achievement was the result of the collective commitment of the entire university community in strengthening the institution’s excellence at the international level.
He said USM would continue to strengthen its higher education transformation agenda through high-impact research, strategic internationalisation, global talent development, as well as a continuous commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This achievement is not merely an improvement in international ranking positions, but rather reflects USM’s capability to continue producing high-impact research, building strong global collaborative networks, and producing graduates who are able to compete and contribute at the international level.
“It proves that local universities are capable of competing with the world’s best institutions while continuing to contribute to the development of knowledge, innovation, sustainability and national progress,” he said in the statement.
