Tehran, Jan 18: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iraq’s Ain al-Asad base strengthens Iraq’s national sovereignty, signaling growing independence and stability in the Arab country.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, in Tehran, Araghchi highlighted that the U.S. military pullout, along with the conclusion of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), demonstrates Iraq’s consolidation of independence and national authority.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported a strong and independent Iraq and believes the country has the capacity to play a key role in regional peace and stability,” Araghchi said.
The meeting, held after Iraq’s recent elections, focused on bilateral relations, regional security, and international developments. Araghchi added that both countries are exploring proposals for a “strategic cooperation agreement” aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region.
Hussein emphasized that Iraq’s security is inseparable from regional security. “The security of Iraq and Iran is part of the region’s security. Just as the safety of the Iranian people matters, so does regional stability,” he said.
The Iraqi minister noted that Tehran and Baghdad had agreed on the “indivisibility of regional security,” non-interference in internal affairs, and the continuation of consultations to address regional challenges.
Hussein also referred to recent unrest in Iran, where some peaceful protests over economic grievances escalated into violence following statements by U.S. and Israeli officials, resulting in damage to public property and casualties among civilians and security personnel.
