KUALA LUMPUR: The Padang Terap UMNO Youth has strongly condemned a recent statement made by DAP Member of Parliament Yeo Bee Yin, describing it as insensitive and disrespectful in relation to the house arrest issue involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Its chief, Jasnizam Husni, said Yeo’s social media post containing the remark “Another reason to celebrate this year end” was inappropriate, arrogant and lacking humanitarian values, particularly as it touched on an ongoing legal matter.
“Statements in the form of mockery clearly reflect a failure to respect the principles of justice and the sensitivities of Malaysian society. Legal processes should never be turned into political celebrations, especially when they involve a former prime minister who has contributed significantly to the nation,” he said in a media statement today.
Jasnizam said as an elected representative, Yeo should demonstrate maturity, empathy and moral responsibility in her public remarks, adding that ridiculing judicial processes only undermines public confidence and reflects what he described as DAP’s continued politics of resentment and hostility towards political opponents.
He also said such statements raise serious questions about the sincerity of cooperation among partners within the Unity Government.
“Barisan Nasional should not be treated as though it has no dignity — being needed when convenient, yet openly insulted by leaders of coalition partners,” he said.
According to Jasnizam, UMNO Youth Padang Terap is of the view that Barisan Nasional must reassess its position and role within the Unity Government if such attitudes persist.
“If arrogance, open insults and disregard for sensitivities continue, Barisan Nasional should not remain part of a government that fails to uphold the spirit of solidarity and justice,” he said.
He stressed that Barisan Nasional must be bold in making firm decisions to safeguard the party’s dignity and the trust of its grassroots supporters.
“It is better for Barisan Nasional to stand by its principles and the voice of the people than to remain in a government that allows a culture of ridicule, belittlement and division,” he added.
