Trump Says Killings in Iran ‘Stopping,’ No Executions Planned, Cites Sources

WASHINGTON, Jan 15: US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he has been informed the killings of anti-government protesters in Iran are coming to a halt and that no executions are currently planned.

“We have been notified, and pretty strongly, but we’ll find out what that all means. But we’ve been told that the killing in Iran is stopping. It’s stopped,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

He added, “There’s no plan for an execution or executions. I’ve been told that on good authority. We’ll find out about it.”

Trump has consistently expressed support for protesters in Iran, where ongoing demonstrations have reportedly resulted in significant casualties. “We have been informed by very important sources on the other side, and they said the killing has stopped and the executions won’t take place. There were supposed to be a lot of executions today, and the executions won’t take place,” he said.

When asked if military strikes on Iran are “off the table,” Trump replied, “We’ll watch and see what happens. But we were given a very good, very good statement by people that are aware of what’s going on.”

Following warnings from Iranian officials that Tehran would target American bases if strikes occur, the US is reportedly withdrawing some personnel from Middle East installations.

Iranian authorities have accused the US and Israel of supporting what they term “riots” and “terrorism” amid the protests. Official casualty or detention figures have not been released, but the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates that at least 2,500 people, including protesters and security personnel, have been killed, with more than 1,100 others injured.
