WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations with Iran are nearing a breakthrough, saying a comprehensive agreement could be finalised within the next two to three days.
Speaking to reporters early Tuesday before returning to Washington from New York, Trump said diplomatic talks continued throughout the recent escalation between Iran and Israel and have now entered what he described as the final stage.
“We are very close to reaching a strong and lasting agreement,” Trump said, adding that the proposed deal would ensure Iran is prevented from developing nuclear weapons.
The president also revealed that he played a key role in helping secure a halt to hostilities between Iran and Israel after days of heightened military tensions. According to Trump, both sides agreed to stop attacks following intensive diplomatic efforts.
Trump said he recently held a productive conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and expects both countries to refrain from further military action in the immediate future.
“He was attacked and responded, but now both sides have decided to stop. I believe they will leave each other alone for at least the coming week,” Trump said.
The US president further suggested that the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route, could reopen immediately once an agreement is signed.
“The Strait will open right away upon signing, and that could happen in two or three days,” he said.
Regional tensions have remained high following a series of military exchanges involving Iran and Israel. Recent Israeli airstrikes and Iranian missile attacks raised concerns that the conflict could expand further across the Middle East, threatening regional stability and global energy markets.
Despite the fragile security situation, Trump maintained that negotiations are progressing positively and that both diplomatic and security objectives are within reach.
“We’ve been a very tough team, and I think we are winning that battle,” he said, expressing optimism that a final agreement could help prevent further conflict and restore stability in the region.
Officials from both sides have yet to formally comment on the status of the negotiations, but diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the coming days as international attention remains focused on the outcome of the talks.
