RIYADH: The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces has successfully graduated its third unit trained to operate the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, following several weeks of specialized training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the unit’s operation and maintenance crews underwent comprehensive programs that included technical and operational training, combat simulations, and advanced field exercises. The sessions were conducted under the supervision of system experts and in cooperation with the US military as part of a joint defense agreement.
The THAAD system is considered one of the most advanced missile defense technologies in the world and plays a critical role in strengthening the Kingdom’s air defense capabilities. A THAAD battery typically consists of 90 personnel, six truck-mounted launchers, 48 interceptors, radar units, and a communications system.
Saudi Arabia introduced its first THAAD battery during a ceremony in Jeddah in July. The training program reflects the Ministry of Defense’s broader strategy to enhance military readiness and bolster capabilities in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
As part of its long-term defense localization goals, Saudi Arabia earlier this year successfully manufactured parts for the THAAD system for the first time. The achievement followed contracts signed during the 2024 World Defense Show in Riyadh, expanding on earlier efforts announced at the 2022 show to produce missile containers and launch platforms.
The development marks a significant step in advancing Saudi Arabia’s defense modernization agenda while deepening cooperation with the United States on security and defense technologies.
