The EC announced the Sungai Bakap by-election on July 6
PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has set the voting day for the Sungai Bakap State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election (PRK) on July 6.
According to Berita Harian, Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr Azmi Sharom, said the date of candidate nomination and early voting was set for June 22 and July 2 respectively.
He said, the campaigning period will be set for 14 days from the declaration of the candidates who are contesting until 11.59 pm on July 5.
“Accordingly, for application matters for all categories of foreign and domestic postal ballots will be opened starting today.
“The closing date for applications for category 1A, which is election officers, members or officers of the SPR, police and military personnel and media personnel is this June 20.
“For category 1B and 1C, which involves Malaysian citizens who are abroad as well as agencies or organizations, the deadline for applications is this June 13,” he said at a press conference after holding a special meeting of the Sungai Bakap DUN by-election, l.
The by-election was held following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri, on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
In the Penang State Election (PRN) in August last year, Nor Zamri who is also PAS President Nibong Tebal defeated Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
Azmi said the Electoral Register (DPPR) that will be used for the Sungai Bakap State Assembly by-election is the latest electoral register until the April 2024 Additional Electoral Register which was updated until May 24.
“This DPPR contains 39,279 voters consisting of 39,222 ordinary voters and 57 policemen.
“The DPPR for the N20 Sungai Bakap Assembly by-election will go on sale on June 18,” he said.
He added that the upcoming by-election required an allocation of RM2.1 million.
“A total of 552 officers will be appointed to handle the Sungai Bakap by-election process with nine regular polling stations containing 65 polling stations or channels and one early voting station.
“The total number of voting centers is 10 with 66 polling stations or channels,” he said.
