BANGKOK, Jan 20: Thai authorities have seized more than 330 million methamphetamine tablets and dismantled several major criminal syndicates during a sweeping four-month nationwide crackdown, marking one of the country’s most significant blows against the narcotics trade in recent years.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the operation, carried out between October 2025 and mid-January, led to the arrest of more than 88,000 suspects and the freezing of assets worth over 3.39 billion baht (about RM442 million).

“We are operating under a ‘must win’ mandate,” Anutin told reporters, stressing that the campaign was not only focused on drug seizures but also on dismantling the networks behind the trade, including international syndicates and local enablers.

Authorities highlighted 15 major cases involving large-scale trafficking operations, reflecting the increasing sophistication of drug syndicates. Among the most high-profile arrests was Chiang Ming-feng, described as the mastermind of a transnational network operating from Bangkok’s Asoke district. He is accused of using elaborate concealment methods to traffic drugs for international distribution.

The crackdown also exposed alleged links between narcotics and local politics. In northeastern Mukdahan province, a prospective local politician was arrested after being found in possession of 282,000 methamphetamine pills, a case the prime minister cited as evidence of the deep penetration of drug money into the political sphere.

Law enforcement agencies uncovered a wide range of smuggling tactics during the operation. In Nakhon Si Thammarat, officers intercepted a vehicle carrying one million meth pills hidden in spare tyres and seats and coated in candle wax to evade detection. Along the Mekong River, Border Patrol Police seized nearly half a ton of crystal meth smuggled from Laos, while another major haul of more than seven million tablets was found concealed in a commercial lorry in Ratchaburi province.

Overall, the crackdown resulted in the seizure of 330,148,613 methamphetamine tablets, 11,008 kilogrammes of crystal meth, 1,960 kilogrammes of ketamine and 269 kilogrammes of heroin.

Anutin praised the courage and dedication of frontline officers involved in the high-risk operations and pledged improved welfare support for them. He added that the government will now intensify financial investigations to ensure drug syndicates are permanently stripped of their illicit profits.
