NARATHIWAT (Nov 12): Thai authorities are intensifying their search for a second suspect believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of a Malaysian man in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat, earlier this month.
Narathiwat provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Prayong Kotsakha said the suspect, a 27-year-old local resident, has been identified as the younger brother of another suspect who surrendered to police on November 2.
“At this stage, it has not been confirmed whether the suspect holds dual citizenship,” Maj. Gen. Prayong told Malaysian media through a local interpreter.
“If he has fled to a neighboring country, it is most likely that he used an illegal route,” he added.
Thai police have since set up multiple roadblocks and launched intensive search operations in the border districts to locate the suspect and bring him to justice.
The case stems from a shooting incident on November 1, in which a Malaysian man was gunned down at a house in Sungai Golok, a town bordering Kelantan.
The older brother, aged 31, surrendered the next day to Thai authorities, who are now investigating the motive behind the attack.
On November 5, Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Putrajaya had requested assistance from Thai authorities to verify the suspect’s citizenship status, as cross-border movements often complicate investigations in the region.
Thai police have assured full cooperation with Malaysian counterparts to ensure that those responsible for the killing are brought to justice swiftly.
