According to two people with firsthand knowledge of the matter, Bangladeshi students, who spearheaded the demonstrations that overthrew former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year, are planning to form a political party this week.

As the unrest reached its zenith in early August, Hasina was forced to leave to India as the protests, which started as a student-led movement against public sector job quotas, swiftly expanded into a larger, nationwide insurrection organized by the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) group.

According to sources who wished to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to speak to the media, the student organization is finalizing plans to launch the new party during an event that is probably scheduled for Wednesday, February 26. According to the sources, the party’s convener is anticipated to be Nahid Islam, a student activist and advisor to the temporary administration that assumed control of Bangladesh following Hasina’s resignation.

Under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has presided over Bangladesh since August 2024, Islam has played a significant role in promoting the interests of students inside the interim government. In order to concentrate on leading the new political party, he is anticipated to leave his current position. A request for comment from Islam was not immediately answered.
