KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 :  Police in Kuala Lumpur have ramped up security measures at major public areas and shopping zones ahead of the upcoming Deepavali celebration on October 20, to ensure the safety and comfort of festive shoppers.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Fadil Marsus said the initiative aims to maintain peace and order during the festive season, particularly in areas with high foot traffic.

“The police will act as the main enforcement agency together with other departments to focus on these key areas,” he told reporters during a walkabout programme in Brickfields on Saturday.

Comm Fadil said the enhanced security operation will be carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), local authorities, Rukun Tetangga, and business associations.

He added that Brickfields, home to Little India and one of the capital’s busiest Deepavali shopping destinations, will receive additional police deployment in the coming days.

“Brickfields is among the main shopping areas for Deepavali. We are deploying more personnel to ensure public safety and a secure environment for traders and visitors,” he said.

Comm Fadil was joined by Kuala Lumpur MCPF secretary Yathiren Saminathan, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) deputy enforcement director Mohd Hisham Izhar, and Brickfields Rukun Tetangga chairman G. Subramaniam during the visit.

The team engaged with traders, shop owners, and visitors at Little India, which is already abuzz with festive lights, music, and sales leading up to the Hindu festival of lights.

Police have also urged the public to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities by reporting any suspicious activities, as part of efforts to ensure a safe and joyous celebration for everyone.
