Reduce reliance on foreign workers, prioritize locals

The government must prioritize local workers by establishing fair working conditions and providing competitive wages in order to reduce reliance on foreign workers.

Representative for Sentosa, Gunaraj George, said that lowering unemployment and making the local workers more competitive should be the top priorities.

The Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, insisted on this when discussing his recent decision to allow gas station owners to hire foreign workers in bars and convenience stores.

“This decision is based on what the growing industry needs, but we can’t forget what’s most important to Malaysians.”

“Wages that are too low will not attract the interest of local workers, and this will continue to open up space for dependence on foreign workers as a cheaper option,” he wrote in a statement.

Moreover, he praised the government’s decision to let foreign workers in gas stations work directly for the station operator company instead of going through an agency.

We greatly appreciate this step as it will prevent dishonest middlemen, posing as employment agents, from exploiting people.

He added, “Direct recruitment ensures transparency and accountability, as well as fair treatment of foreign workers.”

Gunaraj discussed the government’s plan to assist criminals in reintegrating into society by providing them with jobs following their conviction for minor offenses.

He praised this work while emphasizing the need for careful execution.

“Giving prisoners a second chance is a noble endeavor, but there needs to be a strict screening and monitoring process to avoid risks and maintain the public’s confidence,” he noted.

In order to deal with the lack of workers, Gunaraj asked the government to choose a fair method.

“We need an affordable job market that supports local workers, pays well, and responsibly meets the needs of the industry.”

“Priority for Malaysians must continue to be the government’s main agenda,” he pointed out.
