Qatar Temporarily Closes Its Airspace Amid Rising Iran-Israel Tensions

June 24, Doha As regional tensions rise in response to Iran’s promise to retaliate for U.S. and Israeli assaults on its nuclear facilities, Qatar has declared the temporary closure of its airspace.

Al Jazeera said that the Qatari government halted all air traffic due to security concerns, making it imperative to protect residents and tourists in the face of increasing instability in the region.

“Qatar has decided to suspend all air traffic temporarily within its airspace as part of precautionary measures in response to recent developments,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Monday.

Just days after the United States destroyed three Iranian nuclear sites, Tehran issued a dire threat of revenge, prompting the action. Since then, several nations have tightened security measures as the region prepares for a wider escalation.

Orders for Shelter in Place Are Issued by Embassies
In response to Iran’s threats of retaliation, the American and British embassies in Doha had earlier issued cautions advising their citizens to “shelter in place” until further notice, citing possible security risks.

“American and British citizens in Qatar are advised to stay indoors and limit non-essential movements out of an abundance of caution,” the advisories said.

Although officials stated that the airspace closure is a part of a larger plan to reduce risks during a period of heightened alert throughout the Gulf, the Qatari government has not revealed how long it will be in place.

Closed schools and increased security
Beginning Tuesday, authorities forced the temporary closure of several Qatari schools and imposed restrictions on aircraft. The Ministry of Education, in consultation with national security organizations, made the decision to protect staff and students.

Should tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States worsen, Qatar—home of the biggest American military facility in the Middle East, Al Udeid Air Base—is considered a possible hot spot.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry underlined the significance of taking preventative action in view of recent regional escalations, even as it restated that no direct threats have been found.

The ministry also urged diplomatic attempts to de-escalate the situation, saying, “The safety and well-being of all people in Qatar remain our top priority.”
