Nine PKR MPs Urge Formation of RCI to Probe Chief Justice Appointment and Judicial Interference

Nine Members of Parliament (MPs) from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) have called for the immediate establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate serious allegations concerning the appointment of the Chief Justice and possible interference in the country’s judicial institutions.

In a joint statement released earlier today, the PKR MPs stressed the importance of upholding the integrity, independence, and credibility of the judiciary — a key pillar of democracy and rule of law in Malaysia.

“We urge the government to form an independent Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the recent claims involving the appointment process of the Chief Justice and any undue influence over the judiciary,” the statement read.

The MPs emphasized that recent reports and public discourse have raised grave concerns among citizens and stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, regarding the impartiality of Malaysia’s judicial system.

They further added that the judiciary must be free from political or external interference, and that transparency in the appointment process is crucial to restore public confidence.

“We must protect our judicial institutions from any form of manipulation or misconduct. A transparent and thorough investigation through an RCI will help uncover the truth and ensure accountability,” they said.

The call comes amid ongoing public debate following recent disclosures and leaked documents suggesting irregularities in high-level judicial appointments. Legal experts, civil society organizations, and opposition parties have also echoed similar demands for an independent inquiry.

The Prime Minister’s Office and the Attorney General’s Chambers have yet to respond to the MPs’ request.

The formation of an RCI would require the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and could mark a critical step towards strengthening the rule of law and reinforcing the separation of powers in Malaysia.
