Najib Case: CEC to Meet Tomorrow to Discuss DAP’s Position, Follow-Up Action

SHAH ALAM: The DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet on Saturday to discuss and decide on the party’s position and follow-up action regarding the house arrest involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s case.

DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke said the party respects the pardoning powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as provided for under the Federal Constitution.

He said DAP has always upheld the principles of constitutional monarchy and the supremacy of the Constitution, while defending the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

“The 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) misappropriation scandal is the largest corruption scandal in the country’s history.

“This scandal associated Malaysia with kleptocracy in the eyes of the world, tarnished the country’s image and eroded public and investor confidence in the nation’s administrative institutions,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Najib was granted a conditional pardon by Sultan Ibrahim, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

The decision was made at the 64th Pardons Board Meeting for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya held on Friday.

According to the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department, the conditional pardon is subject to Najib paying a RM50 million fine.

Elaborating, Loke said Najib’s conviction in the case involving 1MDB was an offence that had been decided by the court, and its impact on the country should not be forgotten.

He said the country and its people continue to bear the financial consequences of the misappropriation to this day.

“According to a Finance Ministry statement on Sept 13, 2026, the government’s total 1MDB obligations amount to RM51.4 billion, comprising RM42.5 billion already paid by the government and RM8.9 billion in outstanding debt.

“From the beginning, DAP has consistently demanded justice and accountability over the 1MDB scandal. We fought for the misappropriation to be thoroughly investigated and for those responsible to be brought through a free and fair legal process.

“We also have not forgotten that public anger over the 1MDB scandal was among the key factors that led to a change of government in the 14th General Election in 2018,” he said.

Loke said the people’s mandate to fight corruption and abuse of power would continue to guide DAP.

He said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh had conveyed a position and views consistent with DAP’s principles while carrying out her responsibilities as a member of the Pardons Board.

“As she has explained, those views were conveyed honestly and frankly in the interest of the country.

“Therefore, a DAP CEC meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss and decide on the party’s position and follow-up action,” he said.
