MENLO PARK, July 15— Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that the company plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into computing infrastructure to advance its ambitious vision of building superintelligent AI.

The announcement coincides with the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a newly established division dedicated to developing artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a form of AI that can outperform humans in a wide range of cognitive tasks.

“We’re going to invest tens of billions — and ultimately hundreds of billions — into compute to lead the development of superintelligence,” Zuckerberg said during a presentation, emphasizing Meta’s long-term commitment to the future of AI.

The move signals a major pivot for Meta, which has traditionally focused on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as its ongoing metaverse initiatives.

With the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company is joining the intensifying global race to build AGI, competing with rivals like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.

Zuckerberg said Meta’s approach will center on open science and open-source AI models, aligning with the company’s previous releases of its Llama language models. He also hinted that Meta will continue scaling its compute capacity—including GPUs and data centers—to meet the massive demands of AGI research.

While Zuckerberg did not specify a timeline for reaching superintelligence, his comments suggest Meta sees AGI as both inevitable and necessary to remain competitive in a rapidly transforming tech landscape.

“We believe that building superintelligent systems safely and responsibly is one of the most important challenges of our time,” Zuckerberg added.

Meta’s plans underscore how AI is reshaping corporate strategy across the tech industry. The company’s expected spending would rival or exceed investments by other AI leaders—potentially making it one of the largest corporate investments in superintelligence to date.

Analysts have expressed cautious optimism about Meta’s bold commitment, noting that such massive investments could position the company as a leader in the next wave of AI innovation—but also carry significant financial and ethical risks.

As of now, Meta has not disclosed specific project milestones or product releases related to its superintelligence ambitions. More details are expected to emerge as Meta Superintelligence Labs scales up its operations in the months ahead.
