LIONEL Messi continues to make history on the World Cup stage after scoring a hat-trick to help Argentina defeat Algeria in the opening match of Group J at the 2026 World Cup.
The 38-year-old superstar opened the scoring early in the game before adding two more goals to complete his hat-trick, thus moving closer to the all-time tournament goal-scoring record held by former German striker, Miroslav Klose.
Klose currently holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history with 16 goals in total.
Argentina dominated almost the entire match with more organised play, while Algeria attempted to put up a fight but failed to match their opponents’ sharpness.
Messi remained the main driving force behind Argentina’s attack, with several dangerous moves that constantly tested the opposition’s defence throughout the match.
The victory allowed the defending champions to start their campaign on the right foot, while Messi once again proved his immense influence on the biggest stage of world football.
